Nach 25 Millionen verkauften Alben und mehr als 30 Single-Hits, melden sich Erasure zurück mit einem Werk voll warmherzigem, zwischen Hedonismus und Herzschmerz changierendem Electropop und -Soul. Als Produzenten holten sich Vince Clark und Andy Bell den britischen Electropop-Star Vincent „Frankmusik“ Frank ins Boot, eine 1-Mann-Kapelle, dessen Portfolio Remixe und Kollaborationen mit Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding und anderen enthält. Derzeit wohnt der Mann, der im Jahre der Bandgründung von Erasure, 1985, geboren wurde in Los Angeles, wo er auch sein Studio betreibt.

Vince erklärt: „We chose Frank because he is someone who has a different approach to the music, who is sympathetic to synthesizers, and incredibly keen. He told me the music scene in London was just too small for him, so he made a conscious decision and moved to LA, with nothing! He just really likes that American pop thing – that whole Lady Gaga, full-on wall of sound.”

Die Kombination von Erasures zeitlosem Songwriting und Franks opulentem, stark prozessiertem Studiosound führte zu einem fruchtbaren Mix:

Andy und Vince explodieren wie Sprengköpfe auf Disco-Love-Missiles auf Tracks wie “Be With You” und “Fill Us With Fire”, euphorische Manifeste der Liebe, eingehüllt in glänzendem State-Of-The-Art Electro-Pop. Doch wie alle Erasure Alben birgt auch “Tomorrow’s World”, die Feier ihres 25jährigen Bestehens, einen Anteil bittersüßer Introspektion und weltkluger Melancholie.

Die traumhafte Break-Up Hymne “What Will I Say When You’re Gone” zeigt sich informiert von zeitgenössischem Dubstep in ihrem stakkatohaften Rahmen, während die schwelgerische post-mortem Beziehungs-Eloge “When I Start To (Break It All Down)” bereits jetzt wie ein zukünftiger Stadion-Klassiker im Werden klingt. In “Just When I Thought It Was Ending” offenbart Andy seine grüblerische Crooner-Seite, “You’ve Got To Save Me Right Now” wiederum entfesselt einen hymnischen Electro-Gospel-Waltzer.

Doch trotz Herzeleid und Ungewissheit sind auch auf “Tomorrow’s World” sonnige Euphorie und romatischer Optimismus die vorherrschenden Farben im musikalischen Regenbogen Erasures. Selbst wenn der hedonistische Furor eine verzweifelte Beimengung enthält – wie etwa in der doomed-diva Chronik “A Whole Lotta Love Run Riot” oder dem nächtlichen Bekenntnis “When I Go Twisting” –, sind Andys opernhafte Stimme und Vinces hochfliegende Melodien stets den Sternen auf der Spur. Beschleunigt von Franks glitzernder Produktion, klingen die gerade diese beiden Tracks nach kolossalen Ibiza-Trance-Pop-Hymnen für den langen Sommer des kommenden Jahres.

In den 4 Jahren seit ihrem letzten Studioalbum “Light At The End of the World” waren Erasure mit zahllosen anderen Projekten beschäftigt. Vince tat sich erneut mit Alison Moyet zusammen, um ihr gemeinsames legendäres Synth-Soul Duo Yazoo zu reaktivieren, baute das Studio in seinem Haus in Maine weiter aus und nahm nicht zuletzt den renommierten „Song Collection Preis“ der Ivor Novello Awards in Anerkennung für 30 Jahre seines Songwritings entgegen. Andy veröffentlichte das gefeierte Solo-Album “Non-Stop” und lieh seine Stimme der BBC TV-Show „Pop Star To Opera Star“. Doch trotz der langen Pause waren Erasure auch in diesen Jahren nicht ganz weg, veröffentlichen sie doch 2009 die Retrospektive Total Pop! – The First 40 Hits im Jahre 2009.

Die Songwriting Chemie ist der Schlüssel zu Erasures seit 25 Jahren ungebrochenem Erfolg. Andy und Vince schreiben ihre Songs, wie sie das schon immer taten: Zusammen im gleichen Raum, face to face, auf Inspiration wartend – die sich glücklicherweise immer einstellt.

“It is just spur of the moment, we can’t write separately”, erklärt Vince, “We are always in a studio with guitar and piano”, fügt Andy dazu: “It has got be the actual physical thing of us being there and doing it. But the songwriting is always in flux. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s hard.”

“I think it’s getting harder”, sagt Vince, “but that’s probably because we’re a bit more picky. We tend to write more ideas than songs now. The way we used to work, we’d have one or two or three ideas, then piece them together into a song. Now we have five or six or seven ideas, so it gets more confusing. But there is still an incredible amount of satisfaction once you’ve finished a song.”

“When we’re together we are really together, but when were apart we don’t talk to each other,” sagt Vince. “I think that’s part of it. And also we are both pretty low key, neither of us gets particularly precious about ideas. We don’t argue about album titles or anything.”

“I just don’t see why there is any need for drama,” behauptet Andy, ironischerweise einer der wenigen wahrhaft dramatischen Frontmänner in Pop: “Vince and I are very similar people really. We are quite monkish, quite Zen about what we do. We definitely share a sense of humour, but I also think politics is important. We don’t talk about it that often, but we both know what’s fair and not fair, who’s a devil and who isn’t.”

Und ihr Blick bleibt nach vorne gerichtet: “In the 1980s and early 1990s, if you counted the number of purely electronic bands in the charts, there wasn’t that much really,” lächelt Vince, “Now it’s like 90 per cent! Who would have thought that? This whole new electronic scene is really exciting, and I don’t think anybody sounds like the music from back then, just because they are using synthesizers. Erasure have never been about nostalgia. We are not thinking about records we made in the 1980s, even if other people are. We are thinking about the next record - and future records.”

“Tomorrow’s World” ist der Klang von Erasure im Jahre 2011, neu gestartet, verjüngt und voll aufgeladen. Sie schauen nicht zurück. Und ist nicht das die Essenz von großem Pop: Eine zeitlose Feier des Hier und Jetzt? Come and join the party.
